Chappie and Pedigree are popular brands of dog food that are sold in most supermarkets.

However, Mars Petcare UK recently has one urgent product recall of four types of Pedigree dry food and one type of Chappie dry food.

Recall of dog food

There is concern that the animal feed may contain vitamin D in excess of the maximum level. The recall applies to the following points:

  • Chappie Complete Dry Dog Food for Chicken and Whole Grain, Batch Code: 045F9MIN05
  • Pedigree Mixer Adult Dry Dog Original, Batch Code: 046E9MIN05, 046F9MIN05, 048A9MIN05
  • Pedigree Mixer adult dry dog food original, batch code 046E9MIN08, 047C9MIN08
  • Complete Dry Adult Dog Food with Chicken and Vegetables, Batch Code: 046C9MIN08, 046D9MIN08, 046E9MIN08, 045F9MIN05, 047A9MIN05

There are no reports of dogs getting sick from the recalled dog food and pet owners are urged don’t panic. However, you should do not feed the recalled food to their pets. All other batch codes are not affected by the recall.

High vitamin D levels

If a dog is being fed for just a few weeks or months, high vitamin D levels shouldn’t be too much of a concern. However, it becomes a problem when a dog consumes vitamin D over high levels longer time. It can cause stiffness, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, increased thirst, loss of appetite, and weight loss. In severe cases, prolonged exposure to high levels of vitamin D in dogs can lead to kidney failure.

If you find you bought one of these now recalled dog foods, you can return it to the store you bought it from for a full refund. To learn more about the product recall, contact Mars Petcare Customer Service on 0800 013 3131.
