MOUNT VERNON, Ind. (WEHT) – A dog is said to be euthanized after family members view it as a freak accident.

May Robinson says on Jan. 30 that her four-year-old granddaughter Kinley Newman accidentally stepped on her dog, Jager. She says she saw her 30-pound dog jump on her granddaughter.

Jager scratched Kinley’s face and the cuts were deep enough for the child to need surgery.

Robinson went to court. She says she was willing to sign Jager to the Humane Society if it meant he had to live.

Chief Justice Robert Aylsworth says while the dog has no violent history, the incident was so dire that the dog is scheduled to be euthanized in a month.

Robinson says being apart from her dog is heartbreaking, but she tries to save his life. She started a petition with more than 10,000 signatures.
