The dog is clearly man’s best friend, at least according to 85 million American families who have furry four-legged friends. It’s by far the most popular type of pet in America.

There are many different breeds to choose from – dogs of different shapes and sizes, abilities and attitudes. Small dogs – those that grow to about a foot tall – are particularly popular companions. They are easy to manage as they do not require a lot of living space or play space and are easy to adapt to different environments.

To identify the most popular small dogs in the United States, Tempo 24/7 Tempo used the latest ranking of the most popular breeds in the country, according to the American Kennel Club (AKC). As of 2019, ALC has registered 193 breeds. We’ve removed the 30 most popular small breeds from this list. Breeds considered for the small category are no larger than 15 inches at the shoulder, according to the AKC.

Dogs are the most admired pets for many, and puppies are the most admired and adorable dogs. Small dogs, especially the toy breeds, are more likely to resemble puppies even when fully grown, while breeds with a strong prey drive or reputation for ferocity may not seem like puppies even at a young age – these are the 20 dogs that stay puppies the longest.
